We welcome you to join us in supporting the essential work of the Huntsville chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Hundreds of thousands of people struggle with mental illness and NAMI helps families and friends care for their loved ones and look after their own health. Medical insurance often falls short where mental illness is concerned and tends to support only the most extreme cases. So many mentally ill people and their families and friends fall through the cracks. NAMI makes sure they have the resources to get the help they need.

with Special Guests from our LA recording sessions!!! - 8 pm
Beckman Institute Auditorium, Building 74 on map
Pasadena, CA
Price: $15, with $5 for Caltech students and children

West Coast CD release party!!!! We will have as many of our LA recording session band, The Big Picnic Band, on hand as possible to make this a very special Jeni & Billy concert. Who are they? In 2013, we decided to join forces with a stellar group of LA musicians to create a very unique Jeni & Billy CD that features gorgeous songs that we've written over our eight year songwriting collaboration, but that never quite fit our Jewell Ridge themed records. Don't worry, Mawmaw is still in there and she is joined by a whole new cast of characters some of whom we've known for a while, but who we've never shared with you. Our collaboration with these stellar musicians represents a dream that we have carried with us through our travels to hear our songs fully imagined in collaboration with a group of creative and adventurous storytellers! Don't miss this truly magical and unique evening -- Jeni & Billy and Special Guests will present nine songs from our new record, Picnic in the Sky, along with selections of Jeni & Billy favorites. Please write us with your Jeni & Billy song requests at jeniandbilly@gmail.com.

Special Guests:

Craig Eastman on Fiddle, Lap Steel, and Mandolin

Dillon O'Brian on Keys and Harmony Vocals

Denny Weston Jr on Percussion

David Jackson on Bass and Accordion

Dave Way on Percussion and Guitar

Benefit for NAMI - Doors 6:30, Concert at 7
7906 Whitesburg Dr
Huntsville, AL 35802
Price: Suggested Donation

We are proud to be returning to Huntsville once again to raise awareness and funds for the beautiful work of NAMI -- the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI provides support to families and individuals across the United States who are living with mental illness. Almost 30% of Americans over the age of 18 are living with mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that two-thirds of children with lifetime mental health problems never receive treatment. This takes substantial emotional and financial tolls on individuals and families, as well as the broader society. From 2009 to 2011, states cut mental health budgets by a combined $4 billion- the largest single combined reduction to mental health spending since de-institutionalization in the 1970s. Never have groups like NAMI been more important in helping families find the resources and support they need.

Please come and celebrate NAMI's exceptional work in the Huntsville community by making a donation and enjoying an evening of uplifting song and story.

IN THE STUDIO
Los Angeles, CA

Hello sweet friends and fans,

Just a note to let you know that we are writing and rehearsing right now for our next studio album!!!!!! There will be a whole bunch of songs that you've never or rarely heard on this one. AND, guess what, we are recording with a bunch of unbelievable musicians! Yep, a Jeni & Billy record with a full band and a genius producer/engineer at the helm. Whoa! It's a big to-do and, you are right, it's going to be different. But folks who've heard a sneak peak from the sessions that we did out in LA in May have been very excited by the sounds and songs. What's that you say? Yes, it will be more expensive than a normal Jeni & Billy record. We surely would appreciate your help seeing it all through. So, we'll be coming up with some ways that you can be part of this new chapter in the tale of Jeni & Billy. In the meantime, if you have a way that you'd like to help, please do write us at jeniandbilly(at)gmail.com.

After five months in a row of touring, we are very grateful for this creative time! Thank you to all of you for making our travels this past year so full of kindness and adventure!

Love and happiness to you all,

Jeni & Billy too

It hardly seems that we could be so lucky to find ourselves in Barnsley once again!!! Our fourth year in a place full of coal mining history and beautiful voices to sing songs of coal and anything else for that matter. We absolutely love the singers at Barnsley, so this is a rather selfish gig for us. We get to give a concert, but we also get to hear one. And then, of course, there is the music that starts and ends it all lead by the very talented and generous Dave Bottomley (who also know his way around a curry and chapati in the kitchen). Very excited that they let us keep coming back as a trip to England would not seem right without a visit.

SONGS OF FREEDOM

Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (CVUUF) in Newbury Park. May 31, 2013 at 8 PM at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

SONGS OF FREEDOM - A CELEBRATION OF JUSTICE, COMPASSION, AND PEACE by Singer-Songwriter Merlin Snider and Pretty Good Acquaintances. A program of  folk and Americana music identified with struggles for social justice, peace, and freedom will be performed by Merlin Snider and his Pretty Good Acquaintances.

Drawing on inspiration from Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and the African American Spiritual tradition, Snider and his band will raise the roof with a joyful sound. Folk—the people’s music, has been a dynamic force in efforts toward progressive social change, from the abolitionist movement on through the civil rights and peace movements, and it still is today.

Snider, who performs on acoustic guitar, has released two critically acclaimed albums of his own songs. He will be joined by musicians Charlie Brandick on bass, Tom Corbett on mandolin, Mark Indictor on fiddle, Deborah Snider on vocals, and Larry Zack on drums. Special guest singer, Amanda Zavala.

An opening set will be provided by Appalachian roots music duo Jeni & Billy. www.jeniandbilly.com

"Jeni and Billy's stunningly original music is as old as the hills, yet brand new at the same time. Jeni is a true poet and a born storyteller, through and through -- many of her songs contain whole novels,” said novelist Lee Smith. And Sing Out magazine  says, “Jeni & Billy have a deceptively simple style that will catch you completely by surprise.”

“Steeped in a sense of place and community, Jeni Hankins lyrics reflect the hardships, trials and sorrows of people whose lives have not been easy, yet they also resonate with humor, spirit and a deep and abiding faith and dignity.    Jeni was raised in Tazewell County, Virginia, in the heart of coal mining country, and she draws the audience into the lives of the miners, their families and the little community of Jewel Ridge.  She has an old fashioned, old style country voice that perfectly fits the songs she chooses.   Billy is the perfect partner, skillfully accompanying Jeni with guitar, banjo and harmonies.”-- Mary Smith - Director of the Richmond Folk Music Society

Advance tickets are available online at CVUUF or at www.merlinsnider.com, for a suggested donation of $20. Tickets will also be available at the door, subject to availability. CVUUF is located at 3327 Old Conejo Road, off the Wendy Drive exit of U.S. 101 in Newbury Park. www.cvuuf.org

Price: Free to the public

We are so happy to be taking part once again in the Chesterfield Library's celebration of Acoustic Music. We'll be giving the second concert in the series which stretches from Sept 2012 through March of 2013, so be sure to check out all of the music ahead. I sure wish I could be there for the program on flatfoot dancing. I might be able to add a new step or two.

Our concert will be a very special one. Called Songs by the Book, this is our mountain music with a literary turn. I have a Masters in English Literature and have been a life-long bookworm, so it should be no surprise that Billy and I have written a lot of songs that happen to be based on books. This concert is an opportunity to hear many of those songs collected together and to hear excerpts from the books that inspired them.

Come on out for a very unique Jeni & Billy concert!

We would love to see all of our Nashville friends at the Bluebird. As many of you know, Nashville is the place where we do our laundry and attempt gardening. It's not a place where we do much in the way of performing, so if you're in town, you may want to take your chance while you can! This is the first time we've played in Nashville in two years!

This is a two hour round and we'll be sharing it with our host Clint Alphin, Texas songwriter Jeff Talmadge, and fellow Nashville writer Haley Dreis.

Come be part of our happy night!

Folk Song Accompaniment & Arrangement (All instruments and voices welcome)

Have you ever wondered whether a boom-chick or fingerpicked style on your guitar would be best for the song you want to perform? Are you ever torn between playing your banjo or ukulele on your version of “John Hardy?” Well, here is your chance to learn how we make these decisions when arranging our songs for performance. You will be surprised at the difference the choice of instrument, key, time signature, and feel can make between a song that plods along and one that’s dynamic and moving. We hope we’ll have time, depending on the number of attendees, to help you think in this way about specific traditional or original songs that you’d like to perform. So, bring a song along if you're so inclined or just come and enjoy. We can’t wait to meet you!

From their website:

The Living Tradition is a non-profit organization working to support and preserve traditional music and dance in Southern California.  We host contra dances, contemporary and traditional folk music concerts, and traditional music jams nearly every month at the beautiful Anaheim Downtown Community Center in Anaheim, California.

All of our events are family-friendly and are open to the public.  Admission prices for dances and concerts are modest, and children under 18 years are free with a paid adult.  There is no charge for our music jams.  Bring your friends, make new friends, get some exercise (dancing), or just relax and enjoy traditional American music.

The Living Tradition events held at the Anaheim Downtown Community Center are partially funded by a grant from the Anaheim Arts Council.

The Living Tradition Concert Series presents international and local artisans of contemporary and traditional folk music for a modest cost in an intimate setting.

Rumor is that we will be teaching Duet Harmony Singing and Appalachian Traditions.  Billy will be our point person on Duet Harmony Singing and is hard at work on our Jewell Ridge Coal Songbook which should make a great teaching tool.  And I'll be taking the helm on Appalachian Traditions where we'll learn to sing Appalachian Ballads through the oral teaching tradition and write new ones too. Billy and I will do a little talking and showing about banjo as an accompaniment instrument to singing as well. And there may even be a quilting lesson in there. We've also been told that we'll be talking and showing a bit about Music of the Coalfields, so all in all it sounds like a grand time!  We hope you'll register and spend the week with us!

We are overwhelmed with happiness at being invited to perform at Merlefest! To give you an idea of how close this festival is to our hearts we are sharing a piece that Jeni wrote for the news section of our website back in 2005: Baptism at Merlefest - April 26, 2005 _______________________ I always look forward to this time of year because of Merlefest. Merlefest is an Americana music festival which takes place in North Wilkesboro, NC, the last weekend of April every year. Two years ago my Dad and I went to Merlefest and I came home with new ears. When my Mawmaw talks of being born again, I think of the way I felt after my first Merlefest. Though I grew up around primitive hymn singing and country music, the old-time sounds that came to me at Merlefest swept through me like a new religion. Sometimes you have to be ready to receive certain gifts and two Aprils ago I was ready. I had a new guitar and I was writing songs and listening to a lot of Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris. I was also writing a lot of narrative poetry from old family stories that my Mawmaw passed down to me. Just before Merlefest I had written what I considered to be my first really old sounding tune, Up On Middle Creek. This song felt more like home to me than any other I had written before because it told the story of my Great Granddad Babe in a plaintive but raw way. Still I couldn’t quite imagine a place where my new song would fit in. At Merlefest I found the answer. In the Traditional tent Dad and I heard the singing of Kari Sickenberger and Laurelyn Dossett, two women who make up the North Carolina based duo Polecat Creek. These women sang with conviction and honesty. Their voices were beyond pretty, their voices were innervating. Hearing them made me feel like life just started over and I should jump up and shout about it, but instead I was glued to my seat. Their voices just seemed to climb up and down all over each other and then they would meet for an eerie moment. All this was happening, but it didn’t seem like a fancy trick or choral acrobatics. They just gave the song what it wanted. And then I came to find out that those old songs they were singing were new songs they wrote. Without knowing it these women became my mentors and their songs, like those of Gillian Welch and, later, Martha Scanlan, became the bar which I set my songs against. Merlefest is a hotbed for a lot of different talent. There are bluegrass all-stars who will pick a mandolin so fast and clean it’s like a drill in your head. And there are tribe bands that will skillfully and subtly send you into a Sufi-like trance. But I go to Merlefest for the songwriting – for an immersion education in story and melody. Two years ago I was baptized in Polecat Creek. It’s time to get my feet wet again.

The center is divided into seven small gallery spaces devoted exclusively to the exhibition and sale of work created by local craftspeople, artists, student apprentices, authors and musicians; while a large rotating exhibition space showcases regional artisans.

Many folks who have stopped along the road at the Arts Center have found our Jewell Ridge Coal CD playing in the background!  And we've had lots of letters from folks who have bought our CD there.  So, we are looking forward to this homecoming and celebrating the release of our new CD, Longing for Heaven!

Jeni & Billy are returning to SXSW! Showcase or no showcase, we discovered in 2009 that this is a place to get inspired, get in touch, and get a lot of swag.  As big fans of documentary film, this conference is a bit like Heaven -- plus the interviews with directors, film music composers, and the folks who "can do" and "do".  We had a ball in 2009 and couldn't resist treating ourselves to a whole week of visual and aural nirvana.  Hope to see you there!

Live at the Library - 2 pm
1001 S. Dixie Freeway
New Smryna Beach, FL 32168
After spending the bulk of our 2009 Florida Tour on the Gulf Coast, we welcome the chance to spend some time in New Smryna Beach. Dr. Andrew Turnbull transplanted 1500 souls in New Smryna back in 1768 to grow hemp, sugarcane, and indigo -- the single largest attempt of a lone Brit to do so in the "New World." Sadly many colonists were killed by disease and Dr. Turnbull turned out to be a less than ideal landlord. So, the bulk of his colonists marched up the King's Highway to St. Augustine to demand better treatment. This all seems to resonate keenly with our new song collection . . . stories of displacement and longing for a new life.

New Record & Rehearsals
All day every day until January
Nashville, TN

Thanks to all of you who came out to our shows, bought our CDs, encouraged us in every little and big way and helped to make 2009 a brilliant year for Jeni & Billy!

We are leaving off touring until mid-January to finish up our new CD, "Longing for Heaven", and to rehearse all the new songs for our 2010 tour.

Our 2010 tour will take us back to the UK for May & June, out to California for our first full West Coast Tour in September, and up to Canada in August for our first teaching camp at the Woods Music and Dance camp in Muskoka, Ontario.

One of the most thrilling dates of our year is Merlefest in North Wilkesboro, NC, in April.  Merlefest was one of the greatest influences in my (Jeni's) journey as a songwriter -- exposing me to the powerful voices and songs of Polecat Creek, the sophistication of Gillian Welch, the raw emotion of Ginny Hawker, and the all out enthusiasm of the Avett Brothers.  It was the first live music event that I wanted to share with Billy and has been a wellspring for us both!  We are still pinching ourselves to be chosen as performers!

As Billy and I reflect on this past year, we are especially thankful that our songs about coal have brought us together with coal miners and the Union that stands by them.  As a global community we are faced with many difficult decisions and a long road ahead in making smart choices about where we get our energy.  But as long as coal miners are going down in that hole so that we can light our theaters and perfomance halls and string power to microphones that get our voices to the back of the room, we are determined to make sure their job is a safe one and that they and their families have proper healthcare.

God bless you one and all during the Holiday season and in the new year.  Thank you for your stories, your kindness, and your beautiful spirits,

Jeni & Billy

We are tremendously honored to have been chosen by Cecil Roberts to perform our songs of coal at his inauguration as UMWA President. Mr. Roberts is the longest running UMWA President after John L. Lewis. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Roberts at the unveiling of a miner's memorial in Cumberland, KY, and were moved to tears by his charismatic speech on the essential need for mine safety legislation. We can not imagine a more fitting culmination of our Jewell Ridge Coal project than sharing these songs among the very men who inspired and celebrating the union that fights for them every day.

Cumberland, KY
We are very humbled to have been asked to share our songs at the unveiling of the memorial to the miners who have died on the job in Harlan County & Letcher County, KY. Stella Morris of Letcher County whose husband died in a mining accident in 2005 raised about $10,000 - through bake sales, the selling of coal miners t-shirts, and donations - to purchase a monument and have the names of local miners who have died in the mines inscribed on it. (Stella would not accept any money from coal companies that offered to donate). We hope those who can will come out to honor these fallen men and support the community that mourns their absence. Delivering the keynote address will be Cecil Roberts, president of the UMWA. Mr. Robert's Speech and the music will be presented in the Auditorium at Southeast Kentucky Community College and then we will all walk together to unveil the Miner's Memorial.

Workshop in Friary Room 1 - 12:45 - 2:00
Beverley, Yorkshire
England
Workshop on Music of the Coalfields: John L. Lewis, labor organizer and former President of the United Mine Workers of America, called the mines “a blood and bones machine that grinds up the miner for the American dream.” In this workshop Jeni & Billy will explore the music that captures this hard work of the miner and that describes life in the coalfields. Mining accidents, layoffs, unionism, feuds, faith, privation, protest, black lung, migration, mechanization, and drug addiction provide the themes of songs of coal. As we move into the 21st Century questions about mountain top removal, conflicts between strip miners and underground miners, and the viability of coal as a source of our nation’s energy are taking the fore in our thinking and music making about coal. Through their own songs about the Southwest Virginia coal mining community of Jewell Ridge, Jeni & Billy illustrate the various song forms and sounds that music of coal can take. They also talk about the work of the great coalfield songwriters and artists including Hazel Dickens, Jean Ritchie, Nimrod Workman, Phyllis Boyens and Kathy Mattea among others. They will bring Barbara Kopple’s Oscar-winning documentary “Harlan County USA” into the discussion and provide a guide to various coal song recordings.

Workshop in Friary Room 1 - 10:30 - 11:45
Beverley, Yorkshire
England
We will be presenting our Workshop, Writing and Performing the Contemporary Appalachian Ballad. Happily, this was a bit hit with folks at the Bread Loaf School of English at UNC-Asheville last summer, so we're looking forward to trying it again. Here's the description: Since the early days of British, Scottish, & Irish settlement in the Appalachians, the inherited Ballad singing tradition provided space, particularly for women, to sing about a range of topics which might not otherwise have been aired, especially in polite conversation. These subjects could include disasters, murder, disappearances, love lost and found, and other news of the day. Mainly these ballads would have been performed unaccompanied, but sometimes with a single drone instrument, the fiddle, or rhythm instrument, the banjo. Drawing on these examples from the past as well as pulling inspiration from film, poetry, and the news, Jeni & Billy have created many new ballads on the edge of the tradition. In this workshop they will share their approach to writing and performing original and traditional Appalachian Ballads.

Turn your dial to WTJU, 91.1 FM, or listen live on the web! Here's a bit about Aer's program from the WTJU website "A Gumbo of Americana (Bluegrass, Blues, Dawg, Old Time, Singer/Songwriters, Swing), Folk Rock, Jazz Folk, International and more... with interviews, live music updates and often special guests in the studio. The music that can't seem to be classified finds a home here & we look to the artists to see how the limits have been stretched, varied, morphed, married, and how new amalgams have formed new horizons. The roots of folk will not be forgotten, but exploration will be the passion."

We are very honored to have been chosen as Musical Hosts (the "House Band") for this year's convention! This was one of our favorite fiddlers conventions from last summer's tour, not just because Jeni was born in Tazewell, but because it's small, friendly, and retains the honest feel of a old convention. The convention is a fundraiser for the Historic Crab Orchard Museum. Now and through the convention they are hosting a special exhibit from the Smithsonian called "New Harmonies: Celebrating the Roots of American Music." We encourage everyone to see the exhibit while visiting the convention. You can learn more at http://www.craborchardmuseum.com/Bluegrassinfo.htm
